Taking Your Run Off Road!

By C. Giovanni Guzman

Recently a few members of Team Runners Lane, including myself have been experimenting with trail running. As many of you may know running by itself is already such a great activity to do with friends or on your own. Trail running however, takes on a life of its own. There is so much unknown to it that makes it very exciting while running on the trails out there. Lately Team Runners Lane has been to Haskell Canyon, The Beast, Mint Canyon, Towsley Canyon, and parts of the Pacific Crest Trail. All of these trails are well within driving distance, with the exception of the Pacific Crest Trail which can either be picked up by Vasquez Rocks or farther up Bouquet Canyon Road, past Lombardi Ranch.

Like many of you out there, we were not too familiar with trail running when we first started out. We would just hydrate enough to get us through the run and maybe take a GU before hand. As we continued to further our distances on these runs we realized that there were a few essentials which we could no longer go without.
  • Trail Running Shoes: What’s important about trail running shoes is that they’re tough and have extra texture on the soles to improve traction on unpredictable surfaces, as well as increased stability. These shoes will come in handy especially if you find yourself on trails that are very rocky or have some loose soil in some areas.
  • Clothing: I'm sure many of you are thinking, Well what is so important about clothing? The truth is, you don't really want to be wearing your favorite running outfit out on these runs. There can be overgrown brush and other obstacles that you might have to overcome and you would not want to ruin your clothes. Just make sure the clothing is breathable and you won't mind it getting dirty.
  • Water Bottle: Ideally on any trail runs longer than 6 miles or so, you would definitely want to bring along a water bottle. Preferably one that has a hand strap and pouches to hold your keys, ID, and any other must-have items. (i.e. GU)
  • Headlamps: For you O'Dark Thirty customers, you may want to consider headlamps on some of your long trail runs. Because the best part about starting before sunrise is you get to watch the sunrise out on the horizon while you're on a trail.
  • Socks: Socks made for running can be a game changer. Regular cotton socks do not wick away moisture, and can be ill-fitting, causing painful blisters. Form fitting socks, such as FEETURES made out of a lycra-polyster blend are much better at keeping feet dry and blisters at bay.

Hopefully these tips will get you on your way to trail running and exploring some new areas in running. Trail running really lets you get lost in the beauty of nature and helps discover yourself.
